Bárbara Varassi Pega


Bárbara Varassi Pega is a pianist, arranger, composer and researcher born in Rosario, Argentina, currently based in the Netherlands. Trained as a classical pianist and specialized in River Plate tango music, she has toured Europe, North Africa and Argentina as a soloist as well as with diverse ensembles and tango dance companies such as: Tango Tinto ensemble, Tango Gradus ad Parnassum, Buenos Aires Tango, Septetoscopio, Cuarteto El Escape, Orquesta de Tango de Rosario and Tango Historias de Amor, among others. She has performed as a soloist with prestigious orchestras such as I Solisti Veneti, Orchestra della Lombardia, Orchestra Guido Cantelli, with members of the Orchestra della Scala di Milano and in renown venues such as de Doelen, Rotterdam; Bimhuis, Amsterdam; Teatro El Círculo, Rosario; Palais de Glace, Buenos Aires; Piazza Navona, Roma; Teatro Arcimboldi, Teatro Civico, Teatro Dal Verme, Teatro Manzoni, Milan; Anfiteatro di Catania; Teatro Ariston, San Remo; Teatro Corso, Venice; Piano Fabriek, Brussels, and many others.   

She recorded several albums with Tango Tinto and some orchestral versions in the CD Gotan Project Live, and published articles related to her fields of expertise. Tango Tinto and Tango Gradus ad Parnassum are currently her two main ensembles.

She has obtained two Bachelor degrees in piano, at the Instituto Provincial del Profesorado de Música in Rosario (1998) and the Conservatorio Statale di Musica Giuseppe Verdi, Milan, Italy (2003). In 2009 she completed a Master of Music at the Tango Department within the World Music Department at Codarts University of the Arts, Rotterdam and in 2014 a PhD trajectory at the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, Leiden University, as part of the docARTES programme.

She works as artistic research coach in the Master of Music and coordinator of the module Music World Wide in the Bachelor of Music at Codarts University of the Arts, Rotterdam, and is an artistic research coach in the Master of Music at Fontys University of Fine and Performing Arts, Tilburg.
